2016 Autumn "Cast off" Newsletter

We are very excited to present the 2016 Autumn "Cast Off" packs to our members, inclusive of five fantastic reds from the 2014 vintage and our new 2015 Sparkling Rose.

Over the last few years, I have been searching for grapes for our De Novo Rosso wine. Working with growers in the Hunter Valley and The Central ranges to improve the quality of fruit by reducing yields, crop thinning as well as identifying premium sites as these vineyards mature. Although De Novo Rosso remains our main focus, we have selected several parcels of excellent fruit that we have kept separate and released as straight varietal wines.

Your first is the 2014 Hunter Valley Sangiovese. A fresh style with bright cherry fruit, a clean medium weighted palate with delightful light tannins and acid on the finish. This wine was awarded a gold and silver in the two wine shows that we recently entered.

Your second wine is the 2014 Central Ranges Nebbiolo from a vineyard just outside Young. One of the oldest and most widespread, distinctive, and distinguished varieties of Piedmont. Nebbiolo is responsible for some of the finest wines of Italy. Light in colour, high in both acid as well as tannin and exhibits a haunting array of aromas including tar, leaf mould, dried cherries, violets and roses. This wines truly has the ability to express the subtleties of terroir. With Nebbiolo's late ripening, vigorous nature and lending itself to be very fussy about soils, this varietal appears to have found a solid home in Australia and in particular the red volcanic soils of the NSW Hilltops region. Ultimately this is a bright fresh modern style that is widely enjoyable as young wine.

Our third offering in your pack is our 2014 Barbera. It is Central Ranges grown, specifically on Mount Canobolis in Orange. The cool climate Barbera, with its perfumed cherry aromas and bright acid, is one of our benchmark wines.

We have added the to your "Cast Off" the 2014 De Novo Rosso, and for me is the most interesting wine in the pack. This wine is again a blend of Barbera, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, with the Nebbiolo providing slightly greater proportion of the blend. This wine is just a little more concentrated and possess an improved structure from the 2013.There has been much discussion of the 2014 Hunter Valley red wines, are they the best since 1965?....... I can say for certain that they are definitely some of the most attractive wines we have produced.

The 2014 Hunter Valley Shiraz in your pack boasts deep purple in colour and is custodian of great depth of flavour. Like all good Hunter Shiraz, although young it is extremely approachable. I guarantee this wine will age beautifully in the cellar for many years. If you enjoy this wine keep an eye out for the 2014 Old Vines Shiraz which is due for release around the middle of the year.

Lastly the 2015 Sparkling Rose is your final wine and our second release of this wine. We were pleased that the 2014 Sparkling Rose sold out very quickly, this year we have again produced a wine very similar in style with fresh berry aromas and flavours with a savoury finish. The perfect afternoon aperitif.

So there you have it, your 2016 Autumn "Cast Off’. We feel these six are a perfect balance to bid goodbye to Summer while we head, glass in hand, into our cooler months.

Happy Drinking.
